Can it be reused?
Before you throw out large items in good condition, have you thought about donating these for reuse? A number of charities in Staffordshire will happily collect your unwanted goods in order to help others.
What can be donated for reuse?
Charities can only accept goods for reuse if:
- The item is in good clean working condition suitable to pass straight on to someone in need without the need for repair or cleaning.
- Sofas or upholstered furniture must have fire labels (complying to 1988 Regulations or later)
- Mattresses must carry a label which refers to BS7177
- Children’s items must conform to modern standards (e.g. prams and pushchairs, stairgates)
Donna Louise Children's Hospice
Donna Louise Children’s Hospice provides a quality palliative care service to children, young people and their families. The care takes a complete approach to treating serious illness focussing on the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of the child relieving suffering and controlling pain and symptoms.
What area is covered?
- North Staffordshire: Newcastle Under Lyme and Staffordshire Moorlands.
- Mid/South Staffordshire: Stone, Stafford, Uttoxeter, Burton, Cannock, Lichfield and Rugeley

Furniture Mine
Furniture Mine is a North Staffordshire based charity providing furniture to people in need and to the local community through furniture donations. As a local charity, all furniture donations received are re-used to benefit people in North Staffordshire, helping them set up or complete their home.
What area is covered?
North Staffordshire: Newcastle under Lyme, Staffordshire Moorlands and the surrounding areas.
Materials accepted
All items must be deemed to be in a reusable condition and must be: clean and tidy/not scratched by pets/not faded by sun/free from pet hairs/not stained.
Accepted:
- 3 piece suites and chairs or upholstered furnishings with the 1988 fire regulations (or later) label still attached and legible. These labels can be found under the cushion or where feet or castors are.
- Bedroom furniture - including beds, drawers and wardrobes.
- Bed mattresses with the 1988 fire regulations (or later) label still attached and is legible, and bed bases must be from the United Kingdom and comply with BS 7177 regulations.
- Antique furniture.
- Office furniture.
- House clearances, only reusable items will be removed from the property.
Sorry, we can't accept these due to safety requirements:
- Upholstered furniture and furnishing without a fire regulation label.
- Mattresses without a fire regulations label.
- All cot mattresses.
- Child safety seats and buggies
- Gas or electric appliances
- Items that are collected as larger donations but NOT collected on their own as they are difficult to sell on are: Large wall units over 4ft long, TV Units, Headboards, Bric a Brac (pots, pans, glasses etc)
Are there any charges?
There is no charge for bulky waste which can be reused. A fee to cover the cost of recycling - will be applied if the item is not suitable for reuse.

Katharine House Hospice
Katharine House provides free hospice care in Mid-Staffordshire for people faced with an illness that cannot be cured. The aim is to enable patients and those close to them to live as fully as possible and make the most of the time that’s left.
What area is covered?
Mid-Staffordshire such as Stafford, Stone, Eccleshall, Hixon, Cannock, Lichfield, Rugeley, Penkridge.
What is collected?
Furniture and larger items are collected for free. House clearances can be arranged, only reusable items will be removed from the property.

Star Foundation
The Star Foundation intends to create a greater community spirit and instil a sense of pride and self worth which in turn will encourage personal discipline and enhance community spirit.
Through funds raised through recycling campaigns more young people have greater opportunities, enabling them the freedom to enjoy a whole range of sporting and creative activities, including Music, Arts Media within school’s and community led projects nationwide.
What area is covered?
East Staffordshire and South Staffordshire, such as Burton-Upon-Trent, Uttoxeter, Penkridge, Wombourne and Codsall.
Are there any charges?
There is no charge for bulky waste which can be reused. A fee to cover the cost of recycling will be applied if the item is not suitable for reuse.
