Health Visitors work with parents and carers who have new babies, offering support from the ante-natal period until the child starts school at five years.

In service includes a team of Health Visitors, School Nurses, Staff Nurses, Nursery Nurses and Parent Support workers.

They work with families to help support children’s health and development, to make sure they have the best possible start in life.

You as parents/carers know your child better than anyone. As you begin to adapt and settle into a new life with your baby you will soon start to notice many changes as they grow and develop. Their experiences during the first 2 years of life will help set the foundations for their future.

They will work in partnership with you to promote your child’s health, development and well-being from the antenatal period, right through the Early Years by providing you with support, advice and guidance.

All families are offered routine health and development reviews to assess the growth, health and development of their child in the early years to identify any problems or issues as soon as possible and provide an opportunity to discuss any health and wellbeing questions or concerns that you may have.

You will receive an appointment for:

  • A New Birth Visit between 10 – 14 days after delivery
  • 3 – 4 month review
  • 9 – 12 month growth and development review

Support is available from the service until the young person reaches 19 years of age and the team can offer advice and guidance on many topics. This might include parent’s mental health, feeding, sleep, behaviour, potty training, child development or emotional wellbeing.

If your child attends an Early Years setting or childminder they will monitor your child’s communication development as part of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. The setting will talk to you about your childs development putting in place activities to support their development.

Where a child is not reaching typical development, the early years practitioner will observe them and make notes of the areas in which a child is having difficulty. They will speak to you about the needs of your child. They may ask about your childs medical history (e.g. prematurity, Ear, Nose and throat difficulties such as Glue ear), check if the child has had a hearing test and find out if there is any family history of SLCN. The Practitioner will discuss any concerns with the Early Years Setting SENCo. They will then make a targeted plan to support your child and share their targets with you.

Activities will be planned to support the area of difficulty. They will follow a process to see how your child is progressing and if they need any other support. This is called a Staged Pathway The Plan will be reviewed after a period of time to see how the child is progressing and if they need any other support.

Speak to the Early Years Setting SENCo–special educational needs coordinator for the setting about the support they are putting in place. It can be a good idea to replicate this at home.

Family Hubs

Your local Family Hub is a virtual space where you can find advice and support and connect with others in your area.

The Family Hubs offer a range of information, support and advice for families at a local and county level. This is communicated mainly through the Family Hub Facebook pages but can also be answered by individual queries by email, message or phone calls.

We also have produced a wealth of in-house support which has been created by the Early Years Coordination team.

Following your District’s Family Hub on Facebook is also a good way to keep informed on things of interest to families.  It is also another way to make contact with your local Children’s Centre. You can find more information on the Family Hubs on Staffordshire Connects.

Please see Stoke on Trent Children’s Centres for more information on the Children’s Centre offer in this area.
