3-4 years: Who can help me as a parent? - Services for all

Health Visitors work with parents and carers offering support from the ante-natal period until the child starts school at five years.

In Service includes a team of Health Visitors, School Nurses, Staff Nurses, Nursery Nurses and Parent Support workers.  They work with families to help support children’s health and development, to make sure they have the best possible start in life.

You as parents/carers know your child better than anyone. The Service will work in partnership with you to promote your child’s health, development and well-being from the antenatal period, right through the Early Years, providing you with support, advice and guidance.

Support is available from the service until the young person reaches 19 years of age and can offer advice and guidance on many topics. This might include parent’s mental health, feeding, sleep, behaviour, potty training, child development or emotional wellbeing.

  • Make sure you attend your health checks

  • Discuss any concerns with your Health Visitors

Staffordshire residents

In Staffordshire the team is called the Families, Health and Wellbeing 0-19  service.

The team are available, either via the telephone HUB, one to one appointments, Chat Health or at child health clinic. Further information can be found on the website If you have a concern about your child’s health or development at any age contact the HUB or Chat Health. A Health Visitor, Nursery Nurse or Specialist Public Health Practitioner can talk through any concerns with you.

If your child attends an Early Years setting they will monitor your child’s communication development as part of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework. The setting will talk to you about your childs development, putting in place activities to support their development.

Staffordshire Children’s Centres  

Children’s Centres across Staffordshire provide further information, support and a variety of sessions for families.  These include:  

  • Supporting your child’s development

  • You and your child’s wellbeing 

  • Parenting support 

  • Free Pass Card Scheme for eligible families to support with the financial barrier of attending sessions. Contact your local Children’s Centres or ask the practitioner working with you for more details. 

  • Get 1:1 and group support with any concerns from a Family Support Provider. 

  • Find out more information about courses to support you with your child’s development. 

  • Advertising and hosting Bookstart sessions in groups or 1:1. 

  • Provide information on funding for childcare costs. 

Families can see the current activity timetable, links to individual Children’s Centre Facebook pages and Centre contact details on Staffordshire Connects Children’s Centres. Session prices vary.  This information will be displayed on our activity timetables along with booking information. 

Family Hubs 

Your local Family Hub is a virtual space where you can find advice, support and connect with others in your area. 

The Family Hubs offer a range of information, support and advice for families at a local and county level. This is communicated mainly through the Family Hub Facebook pages but can also be answered by individual queries by email, message or phone calls. 

We also have produced a wealth of in-house support which has been created by the Early Years Coordination team.

Following your District’s Family Hub on Facebook is also a good way to keep informed on things of interest to families and another way to make contact with your local Children’s Centre. You can find more information on the Family Hubs on Staffordshire Connects.
