Volume and Speed of Traffic on Sheepcote Lane
Dear Mr Cairns
I refer to the petition, signed by local residents regarding the volume and speed of traffic along Sheepcote Lane, Tamworth. I can advise you that receipt of the petition will be reported to Cllr Helen Fisher, Cabinet Member for Highways & Transport.
The Council carried out a speed survey in January 2018 on Sheepcote Lane. The results showed that there was good compliance with the 30 mph speed limit: the 85th percentile speeds (i.e. the speed at which 85% of the vehicles travel at or below) were 29 mph southbound and 33 mph northbound. The 85th percentile speed is a measure that highway authorities use to help design road features and that the police use for prioritising enforcement. The Council has previously invested in speed cushions on the road to reduce vehicle speeds and on the evidence of the survey this would appear to have been effective.
Looking at the latest complete 3 year period of personal injury collisions recorded on Sheepcote Lane shows 1 slight collision recorded in 2016. Sheepcote Lane has a good road safety record overall. However, given the ongoing concerns raised by the local community, the Council will conduct another speed survey in the early part of 2019 and will compare the results to see if there have been any significant changes.
The local community can also get involved in speed enforcement.
