Staffordshire Day

Staffordshire Day is the day we celebrate everything we love about Staffordshire

Every year on 1 May, Staffordshire comes alive with events of all shapes and sizes across the county and loads of competitions and special offers from our great attractions, restaurants, pubs, and hotels.

Whether you love our captivating countryside, our thrilling theme parks or our eye-opening history and heritage, there will be something for you on Staffordshire Day!

You can visit the official Staffordshire Day website for more information.

What is Staffordshire Day?

The initiative to celebrate Staffordshire was first announced in 2015, and a public poll was held to decide the annual date from a selection of dates that had strong Staffordshire connections.

1 May, the anniversary of Staffordshire's most famous son, Josiah Wedgwood, setting up his pottery company in 1759, was chosen.

The first official Staffordshire Day took place in 2016, the year the county turned 1000 years old.

Staffordshire Day 2023

Get involved with the seventh Staffordshire Day, on Monday 1st May 2023.

This year we’ll be shouting about sustainability: from home-grown food to home-grown talent, we will be celebrating the many ways our county is doing our bit to reduce our impact on the environment and make Staffordshire more sustainable.

There will be a host of exciting activities and events in store for residents and visitors alike, so there will be lots of ways that people can join in the festivities. Follow #StaffordshireDay on social media to stay up-to-date with the news on events and activities.

Further details on this year’s Staffordshire Day programme can be found on the official Staffordshire Day website.

The Big Green Poetry Competition 2023

To celebrate Staffordshire Day, we are inviting residents to take part in the Big Green Poetry Competition. Our chosen theme is sustainability – submissions are encouraged to focus on the natural wonders and environmental treasures that Staffordshire has to offer. With national treasures like Cannock Chase, the Peak District and numerous country parks full of wildlife, we have so much to write about and be proud of.

Artists of all ages and abilities are invited to take part. The competition will be split into three age groups: 4-11, 12-17 and 18+. Three winning poems will be chosen from each group by our Poet Laureates.

The winning poems will be published in a book, which each winner will get to keep. A copy of this book will also be available at local libraries across Staffordshire.

Poems can be handed into local libraries, emailed to communications@staffordshire.gov.uk or posted to,

Communications Department,
Staffordshire County Council,
Staffordshire Place,
Tipping Street,
Stafford,
ST16 2DH.

Please include name, age and contact details with the poem.

All poems must be entered before 12pm on Friday 14 April 2023.

Winners will be contacted and announced on Monday 24 April 2023.
