Meeting new people video transcript

"My name is John and I volunteer at my local library.

I took early retirement and I spent the first 12 months doing things in the house that I had neglected, and then I wanted to do something useful.

As a volunteer I pick books and deliver them to housebound people. I get to know quickly what they prefer to read, deliver them to the house, and then I sit with them and have a chat.

The most enjoyable thing about volunteering for me is the pleasure of being appreciated, and the satisfaction of doing a useful job. Over the years my friends have been in the library, so it’s a pleasure to come into the library and chat with them.

It’s a privilege to be appreciated. The people I visit, look forward to seeing me as well as the books I bring them. The people I visit enjoy my company as much as I enjoy theirs and I class them as my friends."
