Railway footbridges set to be replaced as line improvements are carried out

Two rail footbridges in the south of the county are being removed and replaced as work is carried out to electrify the line.
The electrification of the Chase Line between Rugeley and Walsall involves the installation of new overhead wires. It will mean faster and quieter trains will be able to use the line, improving services for Rugeley, Cannock and Hednesford.
Work to remove the old bridges at Landywood Lane in Great Wyrley and Stafford Lane in Hednesford started this week. Both will be replaced by new structures.
Both replacement projects will take approximately 22 weeks. During the works period, people will be diverted along a segregated walkway next to the road. The project is being carried out on behalf on Network Rail.
Two road closures will be needed on both bridges when the old bridge restructures are removed and the new ones installed.
Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport Helen Fisher said:
"The footbridge replacement is absolutely essential as the current bridges do not meet safety requirements for the electrified line. There will be traffic management on both road bridges while work is carried out so we would ask people to bear this in mind and allow extra travel time. The project teams are ensuring pedestrian access continues throughout. We’d like to thank people for their patience during this time.”
