Gritting teams out in force as unexpected heavy snow hits north Staffordshire

Staffordshire’s gritting teams worked hard to clear roads in the north of the county last night as it was hit by unexpected snowfall – particularly in the Moorlands.
Gritters were out from 4pm yesterday and continued as forecast rain later in the evening turned to heavy snow, causing difficulty to vehicles on the roads.
With cold weather continuing into next week and the potential for more snowfall from Tuesday, people are being urged to check local forecasts before they travel and drive with extra care.
Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport Helen fisher said:
Whilst cold weather was forecast for the whole of the county with some sleet predicted, the heavy snow which hit the Moorlands and Newcastle was unexpected.
The teams had been out since 4pm, but remained on the roads well into the evening as snowfall continued. We’re expecting better conditions today but it will remain cold into next week.
There may be more snow – maybe in other parts of the county too – from Tuesday. We’re therefore urging people to check their local forecast before travelling and make sure they are well equipped. Our gritting teams are ready to hit the roads again to keep the county moving.”
