Progress on the new Poppyfield Primary Academy in Cannock

Ninety-nine percent of parents in Staffordshire will find out today (April 16) that they have been allocated one of their top three choices of primary school.

And 94% of parents who applied for a primary school place will discover they have been offered their first-choice school, as a result of millions of pounds of investment into schools in the county.

Figures revealed today (16 April) show that out of a total 8883 places allocated, 8393 received their first-choice primary school while 8793 were allocated one of their top three.

Over the past five years, Staffordshire County Council has added nearly 8000 primary and secondary school places, at a cost of £61 million. This is to address the rising demand for school places at a primary and secondary level in some areas.

This programme of building and expanding is set to continue, with plans to provide more than 20,000 new school places by 2031.

County Councillor Philip White, cabinet member for Learning and Employability said:

“Thousands of parents will be getting the good news today that they have been allocated one of their top three primary school choices. Our admissions team has been working hard since applications closed on 15 January to ensure all places have been allocated.

“Our forward planning and investment in the provision of more school places over the past five years has meant we have been consistently able to allocate more than 90% of parents their first choice of primary and secondary schools. With our ambition to secure £330m of investment to provide more than 20,000 new school places by 2031, we hope to ensure the majority of parents will continue to be allocated one of their top choice primary schools.”

Parents who applied online will be receiving emails about the results from today onwards.  They can also find out how to help their children on their continuing school journey by visiting our 'getting the best out of school' pages for more information on schools in Staffordshire.
