Thousands of people from across Staffordshire joined in the fun for the county’s fourth Staffordshire Day celebrations today (Wednesday 1 May).
Over 60 events will mark the day with attractions, businesses and organisations coming together to show their pride in the county. The celebrations also saw #staffordshireday trending nationally on Twitter throughout the day
This year’s theme was ‘Made in Staffordshire’, and included a celebration of all the great things to come out of the county. From its brewing and ceramic heritage, as well as food and drink, to the music and some of the most famous people from the county.
Highlights included celebrations of the delicious Staffordshire Oatcake at Canalside Farm near Stafford. At Burntwood library, regulars were busy at the Goldwork Embroidery Session to celebrate the 10thanniversary of the discovery of the Staffordshire Hoard.
Meanwhile, at the Guildhall Gallery in Stafford, staff were busy putting the finishing touches to their Made in Staffordshire exhibition to celebrate the best of local artists.
Philip Atkins, Leader at Staffordshire County Council said:
“This is our forth Staffordshire Day and every year it gets better and better.
“It’s great to see so many people and organisations joining in the celebrations and showing pride in where they live. It’s also brilliant to see #staffordshireday trending on Twitter for most of the day.
“We all know how much Staffordshire has to offer but this is our chance to let the rest of the country and the world know about what a great place it is to live and visit. And, the fun doesn’t end today, there’s still plenty happening over the week and bank holiday weekend too, so make sure you get the chance to join in the celebrations.”
Richard Swancott, from Enjoy Staffordshire who are behind the day added:
“Once again we’ve been overwhelmed by the number of people and tourism providers getting involved in our Staffordshire Day celebrations. We’re a great county to visit with great people, attractions and locations and Staffordshire Day is our way of letting everyone know.”
Hundreds of people also joined this year’s celebrations by sharing their mugshot with a Staffordshire made mug on social media while others streamed the best of Staffordshire music on the Made in Staffordshire playlist on Spotify.
Staffordshire Day events will continue throughout the week and over the bank holiday weekend as well, including a Vintage Fair at the National Memorial Arboretum from 5 – 6 May and the Staffordshire Day Plate Raceday at Uttoxeter Racecourse on Saturday 4 May.
The date for Staffordshire Day is 1 May and was chosen by the public in 2015 and marks the creation of the world-famous Wedgwood pottery company back in 1759.
