Residents advised to take care and enjoy the heat safely

Enjoy the sunshine safely

Staffordshire is set to sizzle in the sun this weekend, and residents are being advised to ‘beat the heat’ and take care during the hot weather.

According to the Met Office, there is a 60% chance that there will be hot conditions between 6am on today (Thursday) until 6pm on Saturday.

This means temperatures could reach 28C in some parts of the county by Saturday.

The top ways for ‘beating the heat’ are to:

  • look out for others, especially older people, young children and babies and those with underlying health conditions
  • close curtains on rooms that face the sun to keep indoor spaces cooler and remember it may be cooler outdoors than indoors
  • drink plenty of water as sugary, alcoholic and caffeinated drinks can make you more dehydrated
  • never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially infants, young children or animals
  • try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm
  • walk in the shade, apply sunscreen and wear a hat, if you have to go out in the heat
  • avoid physical exertion in the hottest parts of the day
  • wear light, loose fitting cotton clothes
  • make sure you take water with you if you are travelling

County Councillor Alan White, Cabinet Member for Health, Care and Wellbeing said:

“We’ve experienced some really wet weather over past few weeks, so it’s actually really nice to have some sun at last.  However, we’re advising people to take care, keep as cool as possible, and do their bit to check on older neighbours or those with an underlying health condition.  Try to keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm, and always wear sunscreen and a hat if you have to go out in the heat.”
