People in Horninglow are set to benefit from a new community hub with funding from a new local county council scheme.
The project being organised by the Red Lion House Charity will see former pub, the Red Lion, converted into a new community and church centre for the local area.
Once open, the new community hub will provide access to local services, alongside luncheon clubs, youth activities, social and community events and family celebrations.
The project has received funding from many sources including Staffordshire County Council’s new People Helping People Fund designed to support projects which make a real impact on local people.
The £1,200 funding from Staffordshire County Councillor Bernard Peters will go towards the cost of new kitchen equipment including two cookers. Cllr Peters said:
“This is a really important project that will benefit everyone in Horninglow and the surrounding area.
“What the local community have done here is really amazing. It’s a great example of what can happen when the community come together to tackle what’s important to them.
Cllr Peters added:
“Lots of us lead busy lives, but making the time to do something, however small, to help people’s health and wellbeing or to support children and families, makes a huge difference. I’d definitely encourage other organisations to check out the People helping People fund.”
Chairman of the Red Lion House Trustees, Charles Dean said:
“The idea to buy the pub and turn it into a community centre came from local residents. We are all incredibly excited about the project which will allow us to deliver a whole range of services and activities to everyone in our local community, from the young to the old. We’re very pleased with the amount of support we have received from everyone including Cllr Peters. We’re now looking forward to getting the centre up and running.”
The new People Helping People fund has been launched by Staffordshire County Council as part of wider plans to encourage everyone to think about what one more thing they could do to improve their lives and the lives of others.
Through the fund, each county councillor has a total of £2,500 to invest in local projects that support people’s health and wellbeing, or on children and families who need a little extra support.
Grants are to support new activity rather than a project’s ongoing costs and any funds will need to be match-funded.
