Over 3,000 children from across the county have signed up for Staffordshire libraries Summer Reading Challenge in the first week.
Activities have been running in the county’s libraries with this year’s theme ‘Space Chase, inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.
Children are teaming up with futuristic family The Rockets for an exciting space mission as they track down books nabbed by a mischievous band of aliens. The scheme is asking 4-11-year olds to borrow and read any six library books over the summer holidays.
As children read through their books, they receive special stickers, some with mysterious smells. By adding these stickers to their collectable mission folders, young readers will help the Rockets solve clues, dodge asteroids and discover the missing books, having lots of fun and adventures along the way.
Gill Heath, Libraries Chief at Staffordshire County Council said:
“The Summer Reading Challenge is always a real hit with families over the holidays and we’re delighted to see that over 3,000 children have already signed up.
“There’s lots of fun activities running across all our libraries and we are only one week into the challenge. It really is a great way of keeping children interested in books and reading over the summer. I’d definitely encourage parents to get their children signed up at their local library if they haven’t already done so.”
