Roadworks underway in Burton

Motorists in Burton can look forward to smoother journeys thanks to two highway improvement schemes now underway.

Staffordshire County Council is carrying out the improvements at Borough Road, near the railway station and on Shobnall Road and Forest Road.

The improvement work underway at Shobnall Road which started on 4 August is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

This £650,000 scheme includes the resurfacing of the entire road with crews working seven days a week and overnight. Signed diversion routes, including a designated one for HGVs are in place to ensure the work can be carried out safely.

The additional £350,000 scheme at Borough Road is part of a wider Network Rail project to improve access in and around the railway station. Work will see the widening of the road to create bus lay-bys, new bus shelters, the relocation of the existing zebra crossing and the resurfacing of the road and pavements. Two weeks in and the work is still on schedule to be completed in late September.

Both schemes are part of a £1m investment in the town’s roads over the summer.

Helen Fisher, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council said:

“These are two very important schemes for Burton and the local economy and a significant investment in the town’s roads.

“Crews on the Shobnall job are already working seven days a week and at nights, pulling out all the stops to get the work done on schedule.  Work on Borough Road is also progressing well and is part of a wider Network Rail scheme to redevelop the railway station.

“Both schemes have been scheduled in during the summer holidays when the roads are generally quieter to help minimise any disruption.  Diversions are in place at both schemes and I would encourage people to follow them. I would like to thank people in advance for their patience during the works.”

Suitable diversions are in place throughout the works, including a specific diversion for HGVs on the Shobnall scheme. People can find out more about both schemes on our website.
