News that an independent review of the HS2 scheme is to be carried out, has been welcomed by the Leader of Staffordshire County Council.
The Government’s Transport Secretary Grant Shapps announced the review today (August 21),with the findings expected to be ready by the Autumn.
The HS2 review will consider:
- Its benefits and impacts
- Affordability and efficiency
- Deliverability and scope
- Its phasing, including its relationship with Northern Powerhouse Rail
If built, the high speed link will run through 45 miles of Staffordshire, from the West Midlands to Crewe.
Philip Atkins, Leader of Staffordshire Council, said:
“While this is a decision for Parliament, from the outset we have made it clear that we will do everything we can to mitigate its impact, win timely compensation for affected communities and ensure we share in improved connectivity and economic benefits.
“While our position on HS2 remains unchanged, we welcome this independent review of the impact, affordability and scope of the project and look forward to examining the detail of the findings in the autumn.”
A final report will be sent to the Secretary of State, with oversight from the Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer.
The report will inform the government’s decisions on next steps for the project. Limited, largely preparatory works, on the project will continue in parallel with the report’s work.
The county council has already called for a halt on these work in Staffordshire until the full scope of the project is confirmed.
