Residents Urged To Act Now To Help Stop COVID Alert Level Rising

Posted on Thursday 15th October 2020

Residents and businesses across South Staffordshire are being warned the area could face tougher COVID-19 measures, unless the spread of infection is curbed.

The district, like the whole of Staffordshire, is currently on the “Medium” Alert level of the ‘ three tiered alert levels of: Medium, High and Very High.

However, the number of COVID-19 cases in South Staffordshire has risen sharply in recent weeks and there is an increasing risk not only to people’s health, but that South Staffordshire could be moved to High alert. This would mean that meeting people from other households would be illegal.

Alan White, Leader of Staffordshire County Council, said:

“We are doing everything we can to tackle the rising numbers and will continue to put the case for keeping South Staffordshire and indeed the whole of the county on the lowest alert level it is safe to do so.

“Nobody wants to see further restrictions on families and friends getting together or potentially businesses closing if the situation continues to escalate.

“We must act now and this means following the rules like never before.”

The rate of cases in South Staffordshire remains above both the average rate for Staffordshire and for the West Midlands.

Brian Edwards, Leader of South Staffordshire District Council, said:

“We have had fantastic support across our communities in the efforts to tackle COVID-19 and have seen a slight dip in cases in the last few days.

“We need to build on this and continue to stick to the rules to keep South Staffordshire people safe and the district free from further measures.

“This means us all playing our part and we will also not hesitate to take action against those who repeatedly ignore the rules and put the health and welfare of the people who live and work in South Staffordshire at risk.”
