Main road junction to be upgraded to provide access to homes development

Work to modify a main road junction north of Stafford to create access to a new housing development begins this month.

The junction on the A34 at Redhill provides access on its western side to Redhill Business Park, which was developed by the county council. A new arm will be built on the eastern side for access to the Marston Grange housing development. This will eventually become a spine road through the development and link the A34 Stone road with the B5066 Sandon Road.

Starting on Monday February 15, the scheme is scheduled to take 42 weeks. It is being managed by the county council’s highways team and fully funded by developers.

The scheme includes widening the A34 to create a dedicated left turn lane southbound and a right turn lane within the former central reservation for northbound traffic. The existing southbound pavement will be widened to create a shared footway and cycleway. On the southbound section the speed limit will be reduced on the junction approach.

During the scheme period traffic management will need to be put in place so work can be carried out safely. This will include lane closures and some overnight closures on one direction at any time. These closures will be coordinated with any planned M6 closures taking place as part of the smart motorway scheme.

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport David Williams said:

The upgrade to this junction on the A34 is necessary to provide access to the Marston Grange development and is being funded by the developers.

This is a busy road and throughout the works period it will remain open, though with traffic management in place throughout. Our project team is ensuring any one-way closures do not clash with M6 night-time closures. While some delays will be inevitable, particularly as more traffic begins to return to the roads, we will of course make every effort to keep disruption to a minimum.

A significant amount of development will be taking place in several parts of Stafford in the coming years and so appropriate infrastructure needs to be in place. The project team will be keeping the local community and businesses informed throughout.”
