Covid-19 cases in Tamworth have hit a record high for the area, beating rates seen at the height of the pandemic last year.

Cases are now at 550 per 100,000 population, the highest they have ever been and nearly triple the Staffordshire and England averages.

Many cases have been linked to hospitality venues across the town, with transmission in licensed premises showing Euro 2020 matches.

The majority of cases are being seen in young adults and teenagers.

Local schools have seen big increase in cases over the past few weeks, with some primary and secondary schools undergoing PCR testing of pupils.

People in Tamworth are being warned they must do everything they can to keep case rates down, follow guidance, and stop the spread of the virus.

This includes sticking to hands, face, space and fresh air, getting tested regularly, and get vaccinated as soon as possible.

Dr Richard Harling, Director for Health and Care at Staffordshire County Council said:

“It is clear that Covid is spreading rapidly across the whole of Tamworth. We must try and contain the virus to avoid older and vulnerable adults becoming infected and give the Government the confidence to release restrictions. We know a lot of infections have stemmed from Euro 2020 matches being shown in licensed premises in the town, and that this is having a knock-on effect in our schools.

“The rates in Tamworth are the highest they have ever been. We have to take this seriously and get control of the virus as quickly as possible. This means everyone sticking to the rules, getting tested often and getting the vaccine as soon as they can.”

Jeremy Oates, Leader of Tamworth Borough Council said:

“Tamworth is in the unenviable position of having some of the highest Covid-19 rates in the country, and we need to do everything we can to stop this virus from spreading. I would urge people to be sensible, especially when out and about or enjoying the football this weekend. It’s up to us to get a grip on this and drive cases down, and I have every faith that the people of Tamworth with take this seriously, and do everything they can to stop the virus spreading in our communities.”
