Cyclists urged to have their say about how safe they feel on the roads

Cyclists in parts of Staffordshire are being invited to share their thoughts and opinions about how safe they feel on the roads.

The interactive project is taking place in Cannock Chase, at Birches Valley Forest Centre and Marquis Drive Visitor Centre and also at Chasewater Country Park.

The initiative is being run by the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership, with support from Staffordshire County Council and Hello Lamp Post.

Familiar objects including trees and benches are ready to strike up friendly conversations via SMS, to hear what cyclists have to say.

To have their say, people will need to spot the bright blue signs, where they will be prompted to either scan the QR code or text the dedicated number, using any mobile phone.

The objects will ask a variety of questions, encouraging people to share their views and comments.

Taking part is free and standard text messaging rates apply.

All conversations are anonymous and the feedback gathered will be used to help inform the partnership around future campaigns and training in order to improve road safety.

David Williams, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport at Staffordshire County Council and Joint Chair of the Staffordshire Safer Roads Partnership said:

“Keeping all road users safe is our priority and our roads continue to be amongst the safest in the country.

“This is an important project that will help us connect with cyclists and find out about how safe they feel on our roads, whether they cycle for pleasure or commute to and from work.

“We hope the campaign and the eye-catching blue signs will encourage cyclists to think about their own safety and that of other road users, but, more importantly, we want people to share their opinions and ideas, which will help inform any future road safety campaigns or training that may be required.

"The campaign will take the form of interactive questions, so please look out for the signs and join in the conversation.”

 Some of the questions include:

  • How safe do you feel cycling on the roads?
  • What would help you to feel safer when you’re riding your bike?
  • How do you feel when approaching a roundabout or junction on your bike?
