Almost £4 million of funding has been earmarked for improvements to the Nicholson Institute in Leek.
The money is part of a wider £17.1m grant from the Government’s Levelling Up funding to be spent on the town including on the Butter and Trestle markets, and Brough Park leisure centre.
The landmark Nicholson Institute building in the centre of Leek is home to the town’s library, museum, and art gallery. Under the proposals, the first floor of the centre will be refurbished and repurposed to provide further education and cultural facilities.
The bid was submitted by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council, in partnership with Staffordshire County Council and Leek and Buxton College.
Victoria Wilson, Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture at Staffordshire County Council said:
“This is great news for people in Leek and the surrounding area.
“The funding covers a number of developments in Leek including the refurbishment of the Nicholson Institute. It will see improvements to the Library, Arts and museum facilities, with the funding providing a great opportunity to maximise the use of this iconic resource for the people of Staffordshire Moorlands and beyond.
“We continue to work closely with our district and borough colleagues to create more opportunities for our communities, boost our economy and better connect people. This closer partnership working through the Staffordshire Leaders Board, will also help strengthen our case when it comes to future funding opportunities.”
