People across the country and the Commonwealth are invited to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty the King and Her Majesty The Queen Consort over a weekend of special events on 6–8 May.
The Coronation takes place at Westminster Abbey in London on Saturday 6 May, the first coronation of a monarch in 70 years.
Staffordshire will be joining the celebrations and people are being encouraged to join neighbours to host their own street parties and events.
In most cases, people who wish to host a small community event that involves closing their street, can go ahead just by following a simple process. It only starts to get complicated when larger roads need to be closed, where alcohol is being sold or for events where tickets are required.
There are a few simple things that people need to think about, for example how a fire engine or ambulance would get access if there was an emergency, but if residents have thought about some simple precautions, then it really isn’t a big issue.
People can go direct to their district or borough council, who have the necessary powers to temporarily close a road. Alternatively, if the proposed event is more complex and unable to be covered using the district/borough powers, people can apply to host a street party through the county council website at www.staffordshire.gov.uk/coronation.
Staffordshire County Councillor, Simon Tagg said:
“We want people to be able to enjoy the Coronation, as part of what is going to be a fantastic weekend of celebrations.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to come together with friends, family, and your local community to be part of history. I do hope that people are able to join in and organise their own activities, street parties and fairs. These are all great ways of bringing neighbourhoods together and boosting community spirit."
People who are hosting a public event, street party or activity to celebrate the Coronation can list their event on an interactive map at https://coronation.gov.uk/share-event/. People can also search the online map for events near them.
