People with overdue library books in Staffordshire are being reminded to return them before charges for the late return of items are re-introduced from 1 July 2023.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Staffordshire libraries suspended these charges and, for their reintroduction, the charges will remain at 2020 prices. From 1 July, any outstanding library items from pre-pandemic times will have the maximum charge of £6 per item applied, as well as a replacement charge if items are lost or damaged.
Charges will be applied from the due date of the items, and the cost per overdue item, for each day the issuing library is open, is 25p as standard, and 15p where concessionary charges are made. Children under-18 will be exempt from overdue charges.
Library customers are also being reminded of the things they can do to help avoid any cost by renewing their books before the due date. Every library member can ask for a PIN so that they can access their library account online or via the Staffordshire Libraries: Your Library App. Alternatively, people can contact their local library directly, call the 24-hour renewal line or request a reminder email to be set up on their account.
Victoria Wilson, Cabinet Member responsible for libraries at Staffordshire County Council said:
Many people have reconnected with their library since the pandemic which is great and we’re now urging people to return any overdue items before the start of July when charges are re-introduced.
Getting the items back in on time means we can then get them loaned out again to other readers. There are lots of things library users can do to avoid overdue charges, so speak to a member of staff when you’re next in your library.”
Staffordshire Libraries continue to provide free access to ebooks and eaudio, as well as to authoritative online resources, including the renowned Complete Business Reference Advisor (COBRA).
People can keep up to date on what libraries are doing on their social media channels.
