The site team apply the finishing touches to the A449 earlier this week.

A main road leading into Stafford has reopened after a 12-week improvement scheme.

The A449 Wolverhampton Road is now fully open following completion of the scheme, which has seen resurfacing and improvements to footways and kerbs. Work has taken place on the section between the A34/A449 roundabout to Ingestre Road and the railway bridge.

A £650,000 investment will give the road a long-term lifespan of between 20 and 30 years.

During the scheme, a one-way closure was in place, with traffic able to travel northbound, and some full closures were also needed.

Work has been completed ahead of other significant schemes in Stafford including A34 Gaol Square and A34 Weeping Cross.

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways Mark Deaville said:

We’re pleased that one of the busiest routes into Stafford is now fully open after undergoing significant improvements which will be long-lasting.

This stretch of the road was in need of this work and we’ve aimed to carry it out as quickly as possible, despite some challenging weather conditions.

It was also vital to complete the scheme ahead of others due to start in Stafford over the next few weeks.

We understand that this has caused inconvenience and disruption for which we apologise, but it was important to undertake the scheme now.

We’d again like to thank people for their patience while work was carried out.”
