Community groups from across Staffordshire have been awarded funding for projects that help improve the local environment.

Grants of up to £1000 were awarded to 23 local community groups through the Staffordshire EnviroGrant programme, delivered by Staffordshire County Council and environmental company Veolia.

Awards were made to projects that help improve waste and recycling, improve the natural environment, and raise awareness of environmental issues.

Nature Community CIC was awarded £1000 for their growing communities project, which has created community gardens and cooking sessions for all ages and backgrounds.

Horton Lodge Special School in Leek received £1000 for a uniform recycling project.  Whilst in Lichfield, Woodhouse Farm and Garden received £950 for setting up a food waste education scheme.

Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Infrastructure and Climate Change, Simon Tagg, said:

“As a county council we are committed to making Staffordshire sustainable and improving our environment, but we can’t do that without the help of community groups.

“That’s why, together with Veolia, we wanted to award funding to voluntary and community groups of all sizes across the county. It’s a great opportunity that’s not only benefiting local communities but also helps to improve the environment in which we all live.

“It’s great to see such a wide range of groups being funded and I wish them well with their projects and look forward to seeing the results.”

Regional Director for Veolia. Steve Mitchell said:

“We are delighted that through EnviroGrant we can support these projects.  Supporting our local community and biodiversity are key elements of Veolia’s purpose of Ecological Transformation.  I look forward to seeing how the groups make the most of their awards.”

This was the seventh EnviroGrant Awards Ceremony, which was held on Thursday 27 June at County Buildings in Stafford.  In the last seven years, over £80,000 have been awarded to groups
