A bridge in Branston will be under a weight restriction for the foreseeable future, for safety reasons.

The Branston Railway Bridge on the B5018 Main Street will be restricted to vehicles under 7.5 tonnes, and will have a 2.3 metre width restriction imposed along its length.

This 185-year-old bridge was previously under a weight restriction of 7.5 tonnes except for access.

These latest restrictions come after routine inspections revealed defects on the bridge that need repairing. Options are already being drawn up to repair the bridge, and work will begin as soon as possible.

Traffic signals will be installed today to restrict traffic to single way working, also allowing highway crews to work. Bus companies and local businesses have been notified.

A diversion route for all vehicles over 7.5 tonnes and 2.3m wide will be signed and put in place commencing next week.

County Councillor Keith Flunder, Cabinet Member for Highways Operations North said:

“A routine inspection revealed some defects which means the bridge is now unsuitable for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes. For everyone’s safety, we’ve put in a weight restriction on the bridge to allow work to take place so they can address the issues.

“Unfortunately, due to the nature of the work we can’t confirm how long these measures will be in place, but we will be sure to keep local residents, bus companies and businesses updated. These restrictions have had to be put in place to ensure the safety of motorists crossing the bridge, train commuters and our crews, who are working as quickly as they can to address the issue. We want to thank everyone for their patience while we carry out these essential repairs.”
