Staffordshire Trading Standards Officers outside Staffordshire County Council

Staffordshire County Council Trading Standards is urging residents to remain vigilant against financial scams during national Scams Awareness Week which starts today.

With financial and investment scams on the rise, officers are reminding people of the importance of protecting themselves from falling victim to these crimes.

Scams can take many forms.  From classic pyramid schemes to sophisticated fake websites that mimic legitimate investment platforms, using AI technology to deceive users into parting with their hard-earned savings.  The advice from campaign organizers Citizens Advice is simple:

  1. Don’t Rush: Never feel pressured to make an investment decision on the spot.  Take time to research and verify the opportunity carefully.
  2. Check Legitimacy: Use the Financial Services Register to check if the company or individual is authorized by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
  3. Protect Your Personal Information: Avoid giving out personal or financial details to unsolicited callers or emails.  Always ensure you are dealing with a reputable source.

“Investment scams can have devastating effects on individuals and families” says Victoria Wilson, cabinet member for communities and culture at Staffordshire County Council.

Cllr Wilson said:

“It’s really important to stay informed and to be cautious when these opportunities are presented to you.

"By following some simple steps like not rushing in, verifying the legitimacy of opportunities and protecting your personal information, we can all help to prevent these scams.  By working together and raising awareness of the issue we can help everyone stay #ScamAware and keep our communities safe.”

The campaign runs until Sunday 27 October.  Anyone who feels they have been the victim of fraud should contact their banks immediately and to report the scam to Citizens Advice (0808 223 1133) and Action Fraud (0300 123 2040).

Staffordshire consumers can also report matters directly to trading standards via their tip off hotline 01785 330356 or Report It webform
