Multi-million-pound improvements at major Staffordshire transport gateway progresses

Posted on Wednesday 6th November 2024
Branston Interchange

A scheme bringing major improvements to a key Staffordshire gateway junction is progressing on schedule, with latest traffic management changes set to take place this month.

The multi-million-pound Branston Interchange project near Burton will ease congestion and increase capacity at the A38 junction. It includes creating additional lanes around the junction, on the slip roads and on Branston Road and Parkway. New traffic signals will also be installed.

Work will include resurfacing and road sign installation. To carry this out safely the A38 northbound off and on slip roads will be closed overnight on Wednesday 13, Thursday 14 and Friday 15 November, 8pm to 6pm. For each of the three nights Branston Road, to the west of the A38, will also be closed both ways. There will be no access to Tatenhill during this period and a signed diversion will be in place.

A £6million allocation from UK Government funding and a significant contribution from the main developer of the Branston Locks site, Nurton Developments, are funding the scheme. Work is set to be completed in spring 2025.

In addition to improving traffic flow around the junction, the project provides key transport infrastructure for the ongoing homes and employment development at Branston Locks and Burton’s future economic growth.

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways Mark Deaville said:

This project is delivering significant improvements to what is a busy junction and one of the main transport gateways to Burton.

Not only will it improve traffic flow around the junction but support Burton and Staffordshire’s economic growth.

We understand there will be some disruption while any traffic management is in place for which we’d like to apologise for, but it is necessary to enable us to move forward in bringing future growth and prosperity to Burton and Staffordshire.”

Regular updates on the scheme are being issued as it progresses.
