Reconstruction on major road in Tamworth passes halfway mark

Posted on Tuesday 19th November 2024
Coton Lane NEWSROOM

The reconstruction of Coton Lane in Tamworth has passed the halfway mark.

The £1.6 million carriageway reconstruction project on Coton Lane is progressing rapidly as part of a major highways improvement scheme.

Staffordshire County Council’s highways crews are completely resurfacing C03070 Coton Lane, from the junction of the A513 Comberford Road and the southern junction of Fontenaye Road.

The project, which began in September, will progress to phase three on Thursday 21 November and this will see crews replace ironworks and remove more of the existing carriageway. This phase will take around two weeks to complete.

Sections of Coton Lane remain closed 24/7, with each section reopening as soon as it is completed and deemed safe. This is to protect both road users and staff whilst there are open excavations on the highway. Work will be carried out during the day - seven days a week - between the hours of 7.30am and 4pm.

A clearly signed diversion route will be in place, guiding traffic along the A513 Comberford Road, Aldergate, then along Lichfield Road (A51), and back to Coton Lane. The specific diversion route will vary depending on the direction of travel.

Designated personnel will be onsite to assist residents with access to properties within the closed sections.

Rob Pritchard, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet support member for highways south, said:

“It is great to see the major Coton Lane road improvement scheme progressing well. This means it is very much on track for its scheduled completion next month.

“With footways, drains, kerbs and crossings now repaired, crews will now begin the extensive process of reconstructing the road. While the road closures have caused delays around Upper Gungate, this rebuild is essential for safety as we carry out this critical work.

“Please be assured our crews are working seven days a week to complete this scheme as quickly as possible with minimal disruption to the community. I want to thank everyone for their continued patience.”

The resurfacing of Coton Lane is currently scheduled to start on Friday 6 December. This is expected to take around four days and crews will work between the hours of 7.30am to 5pm.

The works are all part of a wider £50 million investment into the county’s roads over three years, which will also see other local roads like Aldergate, Upper Gungate, Lichfield Street and Lichfield Road rebuilt or resurfaced.
