Snow ploughs head out in Flash, Staffordshire Moorlands

Staffordshire’s gritting teams have been working through the night and into this morning to treat the road network as snow fell across the county.

All of the county council’s gritters were out from 5pm yesterday, with the first snow beginning to fall at 8pm. The teams are continuing to work into today and are now preparing for surface water on the roads with a yellow Met Office warning in place for flooding today.

Hill contractors and snow ploughs have been out clearing higher routes in the north of the county.

With snow and ice still present, turning to slush and water as it melts, people are being urged to continue to drive with extra care and avoid driving through flood water.

Mark Deaville, Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways, said:

Our gritting teams have worked tirelessly through the night and into the morning and have done a fantastic job.

We were well prepared and our entire fleet of gritters was out on Staffordshire’s roads last night, in addition to snow ploughs in the north.

As the snow starts to melt there may be some surface water on the roads, so we’d again like to remind people to drive with extra care.

With freezing temperatures set to continue into the week, the teams will be ready to head out again to treat icy roads.”

A cold weather alert for the West Midlands remains in place until Wednesday 8 January, so people are being reminded to stay warm and well, to look out for vulnerable neighbours, and take care when outside.
