Next stage of major Burton road repairs will start next week

Posted on Tuesday 7th January 2025
Horninglow Road N NEWSROOM

Horninglow Road North, in Burton, on completion of the first phase of the road improvement project back in March 2024.

The second phase of a major highways scheme in Burton will start next week, bringing essential upgrades to one of the town’s key routes.

Staffordshire County Council’s highways crews will begin reconstructing the A511 Horninglow Road North, from the junction of Farm Road to Tutbury Road, on Monday 13 January.

This £645,000 project will include the full resurfacing of both the Field Lane and Calais Road junctions.

Monday will see crews begin initial civil works, including the cleaning of highway gullies and carrying out repairs to footpaths, kerbs, tactile crossings, ironworks and drainage systems.

This work will be carried out under temporary traffic signals between 7.30am and 4pm and is expected to be completed on Friday 31 January.

Resurfacing will then begin in early February, with sections of the road being closed in phases based on the area being worked on. These closures are essential to ensure the safety of both road users and our crews.

The resurfacing of the road is expected to take around two weeks. During this time, clearly signed diversion routes will be in place to minimise disruption, and access to homes and businesses will be maintained wherever it is safe to do so. On-street parking may need to be restricted at times, and any residents affected will be notified in advance.

The overall scheme should take around five weeks to complete.

Keith Flunder, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Support Member for Highways North, said:

“It’s fantastic to see another major road improvement project getting underway in Burton. This next phase of repairs on Horninglow Road North will make a real difference for everyone who uses this important route.

“We’re dedicated to keeping Staffordshire’s roads safe, smooth and reliable. This project is part of a wider road repair programme in Burton, which has already brought significant improvements to key routes like Derby Road, Swan Junction, Station Road and the Horninglow Street/Guild Street junction.

“I’d like to thank residents and businesses in advance for their patience while our crews work hard to complete these essential repairs as quickly and efficiently as possible.”

The first phase of works – costing £900,000 – was carried out last year, which saw crews resurface Horninglow Road North from the junction of Horninglow Croft to the junction of Farm Road.
