Snow ploughs out again in north of county as all residents urged to be vigilant over flood warnings

Snow plough in Flash Jan 7

A snow plough in operation in Flash.

Snow ploughs hit the roads in the north Moorlands again last night following the latest snowfall – while residents across the county are today urged to be vigilant to any flood warnings or alerts for their area.

Whilst heaviest in the north, there were snow showers across Staffordshire and the gritting teams were out through the night to treat roads. People are reminded that even where roads are gritted they should drive to the conditions.

Today 18 flood warnings remain in place in Staffordshire, mainly in areas around the rivers Anker, Dove, Tame and Trent. There are a further 21 flood alerts.

Rural roads in particular have been affected where there is water run-off from fields as snow melts.

People can check the latest updated flood warnings and alerts for the county on the Government’s alerts and warnings webpage.

Some schools were closed yesterday, mainly in the north and Cannock areas, with a few primaries in the north still closed today. People can check closures on the county council’s schools closures webpage

Staffordshire County Council’s cabinet member for strategic highways Mark Deaville said:

While most of the county had light snow showers last night, it was heavier in the north and our snow ploughs were in action again, with gritting teams out across Staffordshire’s road network.

We’re now asking people to check local flood alerts for their area and be aware that there will be surface water on some roads, particularly in rural areas.

With sub-zero nighttime temperatures forecast this week, our gritters will be out countywide, though we’d again remind people to drive with extra care.”
