Burton Library is hosting a series of events to welcome the community into its new-look space.

Live music, an audience with popular sports journalists and a free book give away for World Book Day are some of the events running at the library.

The season of celebration kicks off on 28February with a live concert featuring local band Acoustica.  The event is being organised by Burton Library Friends Group and will run from 6.30pm until 9pm.  Tickets are £9 from the library or on the door on the night.

As part of this year’s World Book Day celebration on Thursday 6 March to encourage a love of reading, the library will be swapping free book tokens for books for children.  The book giveaway will run from 24 February until the end of March.  School children are also invited to an event with award-winning Staffordshire author, Ben Davis on 12 March as part of the celebrations.

The recent refurbishment at the library has transformed the ground floor into a vibrant, multi-purpose, accessible and inclusive space.  It includes a flexible space for events and activities or for community learning, a children’s area, teen’s area and a quiet zone.

Victoria Wilson, Staffordshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, said:

“Our libraries are community hubs and we continue to invest in them to make sure they provide the best service to our residents.

“Having had a major refurbishment, the library looks great, with people enjoying their new surroundings.  We’re constantly looking at new activities and events that people want, including things like live music, school visits, fun events, and more evenings with famous authors.

“I’d encourage people to drop along and see for themselves or book themselves on one of the events.”

An afternoon of poetry will also take place on Thursday 6 March from 3.30pm until 5pm.  Staffordshire Poet Laureate Scarlett Ward, and former Poets Laureate Bert Flitcroft, Mel Wardle Woodend and Dawn Jutton will be sharing their poetry at the official launch of the refurbished library.  The event is free and everyone is invited.

Sports journalist and author David Instone and football scout Steve Griffiths, are also hosting an evening at the library on Thursday 3 April at 7.30pm.  The event is free and people should contact the library to book a place.

Further details on upcoming events or to book a place can be done at the library, by calling 01283 881208 or by emailing burton.library@staffordshire.gov.uk.
