Spring warning over rogue traders and dodgy builders

With spring fast approaching and residents starting to think about home improvements, Staffordshire County Council’s Trading Standards service is urging caution against rogue traders and unscrupulous home improvement companies.

Officers are advising people to be wary of unsolicited calls to their homes, not to sign up on the doorstep for services and not to be pressured into accepting offers of work.  Warning signs include requests for large upfront payments, the absence of written quotes and a lack of a physical business address.

Recent storms and the need for emergency repairs have also presented opportunities for criminals and anyone approached on their doorstep who has concerns or feels threatened should call Staffordshire Police on 101.

Victoria Wilson, cabinet member responsible for Trading Standards at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“With home improvements and dodgy builders being the second most complained about businesses after used car dealers, we’re simply reminding homeowners to be vigilant.

“Rogue traders can be a real menace to our communities, often preying on the most vulnerable, particularly the elderly.  Our general advice would be to shop around, get quotes and choose businesses with established reputations, evidenced by reviews and good customer satisfaction.  Never feel pressured into signing on the spot and always insist on a written agreement.”

Common services offered by rogue traders and unscrupulous cold callers include general building work, gardening work, roofing, repairs and maintenance, and driveway resurfacing. Prices charged are usually excessive and anyone accepting work will pay much more than intended.

Using various trusted trader schemes and approval bodies like ‘Buy With Confidence’ can also be a good way of finding a reputable company.  Additionally, there are trade associations that offer mediation in the event of disputes with businesses, such as the Federation of Master Builders.

Further advice on spotting and avoiding rogue traders is available from the Citizens advice website or on 08082231133.
