Posted on Friday 28th February 2025

The Council will continue to monitor public health after the operators of Walleys Quarry landfill entered liquidation.
The Leader of Staffordshire County Council has responded to news that Walleys Quarry Ltd, the operators of Walleys Quarry landfill, has gone into liquidation.
Alan White said:
While the Environment Agency remains the principal regulator for the landfill site, Staffordshire County Council is the waste planning authority and will offer relevant advice to the Liquidator where needed.
We also continue to monitor the public health situation in the area, as the effects of emissions remains a source of concern in the community.”
Notes to editors
During a review of landfill sites in the 1990s, Staffordshire County Council sought to restrict the types of waste that could be imported to Walleys Quarry landfill. The then operator appealed against the condition and that appeal was upheld by the Secretary of State in November 1997.
After 31st December 2026, only inert waste can be used to restore ground levels to previously agreed contours. That inert waste can be received until 2042 whereupon the site will be grassed over.
