(L-R): Mrs Lindsey Gidman, Head of School at St Thomas’ Primary School with Councillor Mark Deaville on New Road, Tean.

Further investment by Staffordshire County Council in highways schemes that will improve road safety are planned for this year.

New pedestrian crossings, upgrades to existing crossings and changes to road layouts and junctions are amongst the £12 million of schemes being planned to improve road safety and accessibility for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and bus passengers.

The improvements are part of a wider £45 million investment in the county’s roads over three years on top of an extra £15 million boost for repairs.

Some planned improvement projects include:

  • New pedestrian crossing at New Road in Tean
  • Conversion from a give-way to stop junction at Brookhouses crossroads in Cheadle
  • New zebra crossing at Handsacre
  • Traffic calming in Knowles Hill area, Rolleston
  • Improved pedestrian and cycle access on Eastern Avenue, Lichfield
  • New toucan crossing on the A513, Marston Lane in Stafford

Councillor Mark Deaville, Cabinet Member for Strategic Highways at Staffordshire County Council, said:

“Good roads affect everyone in this county and our ongoing investment in highways is key to keeping roads moving and safe for all users.

“These improvement schemes are incredibly important and will help to keep not only drivers safer but also pedestrians. For example, the new crossing in New Road Tean will provide a fantastic improvement in children’s road safety whilst walking to and from our primary schools.

“The new Co-Op store on the High Street has also greatly increased the number of people who need to cross New Road.  The pedestrian crossing will have great road safety benefits for local residents and I’m delighted to see this planned improvement”

Mrs Lindsey Gidman, Head of School at St Thomas’ Primary School in Tean, said: “I’m delighted that the New Road Crossing is in the County Council plans for this year.  I’m very grateful for Councillor Deaville’s support with this important safety scheme.”

Mr Adamson, Headteacher at Greatwood Primary School in Tean added:

"We are thrilled to hear about the implementation of a new pedestrian crossing on New Road this year.

“It’s a significant step towards ensuring the safety of our school children as they walk to and from school and will provide peace of mind to parents and contribute to a safer environment for all pedestrians.

“The project is a result of the collaborative efforts of our community, local authorities and road safety advocates.  Together, we are making New Road a safer place for everyone."
