    Upper Gungate NEWSROOM

A £1.2 million project to reconstruct Aldergate and Upper Gungate in Tamworth is progressing well.

A £1.2 million project to reconstruct a key route running through Tamworth town centre remains on track to complete next month.

The Staffordshire County Council highways scheme, at the B5493 Aldergate and A513 Upper Gungate, is seeing the resurfacing of the road between Lichfield Street and Comberford Road.

Work also includes improvements to a section of Offa Drive along with repairs to kerbs, tactile crossings and ironworks in the area.

The project has now progressed to the fourth of five phases, which is seeing crews work on the route running from The Railway Bridge to Croft Street, including Croft Street junction.

Resurfacing will be taking place overnight until 1 April between the hours of 7.30pm and 5am.

A clearly signed diversion will be in place and designated crew members at either end of the closure points will be on hand to assist drivers with access to properties.

Darryl Eyers, Staffordshire County Council’s Director for Economy, Infrastructure and Skills, said:

“Our highways crews have made excellent progress on the Aldergate and Upper Gungate reconstruction project in Tamworth.

“I’m sure people will appreciate these long-awaited improvements and hope they enjoy smoother journeys through the town centre next month.”

The final phase of the project, starting on 29 March, will see crews work on the final leg of the route from Croft Street to Comberford Road.

The overall project remains on track to complete on Friday 4 April.
