Shoppers in Staffordshire are getting some extra help for safer shopping, thanks to timely consumer rights advice from Trading Standards.

The advice is part of World Consumer Rights Day on Saturday, 15 March, to raise awareness about shopper’s rights.

As part of the campaign, Trading Standards officers have offered their top advice for safe and hassle-free shopping:

  1. Know your rights: Consumers are entitled to clear information about the products and services they purchase and have legal rights to redress and compensation if things go wrong. Understanding these rights is crucial for any purchase, and free guidance is available from Citizens Advice.
  2. Know your products: Having a clear understanding of what you’re buying is essential. Compare products, read reliable reviews, and check prices across different sellers and platforms.
  3. Know your seller: Understand who you are buying from. Look for reviews and seek recommendations from trusted sources. If buying online, know where the seller is based, and don’t assume that businesses appearing to be UK-based are.
  4. If something appears too good to be true, it usually is: Be cautious of unbelievable offers.
  5. Avoid businesses that fail to offer your legal rights: Most online purchases benefit from a legal 14-day cancellation period. Avoid businesses that fail to mention this or that restrict these rights by charging unlawful administration or restocking fees.

Victoria Wilson, Cabinet Member responsible for Trading Standards at Staffordshire County Council, said:

"We are committed to protecting our residents and promoting sustainable consumer habits.

“World Consumer Rights Day is an excellent opportunity to highlight these important issues. Knowing your rights can not only help improve your shopping experience but can protect your hard-earned cash and help drive up retailing standards for everyone."
