Community groups from Cannock, East Staffordshire and Tamworth have received a special Unsung Hero award from Staffordshire County Council.
The awards, introduced by the current Chairman at Staffordshire County Council, Councillor Phil Hewitt, aim to recognise the contributions of voluntary groups across Staffordshire.
Representatives of the groups attended a special celebration event at County Buildings in Stafford on Friday 7 February, where they were presented with their awards.
Groups recognised include:
- Tamworth Well-Being and Cancer Support – Nominated by County Councillor Tina Clements
- Uttoxeter Community First Responders – Nominated by County Councillor Philip Atkins
- 3rd Wilnecote Scout Group – Nominated by County Councillor Tina Clements
- Spital Bowling and Tennis – Nominated by County Councillor Robert Pritchard
- Cannock Wood Parish Council – Nominated by County Councillor Phil Hewitt
Talking at the ceremony, Chairman Phil Hewitt said: “We all know groups, large and small, that do a fabulous job in our community year after year, with little recognition.
”Back in October 2023, I launched my Unsung Hero Awards to recognise the contributions made by volunteers right across the county. I wanted to invite nominated groups to join me for an afternoon tea in County Buildings and by also presenting them with a certificate.
“Through the awards, we can show our appreciation to those individuals and groups and thank them for what they do and for the difference they make in their local communities. It has been a real privilege for me to present the awards on behalf of the county council and I’d like to say a huge well done to all the groups involved.”
This celebration marks the final awards of Phil Hewitt’s time as Staffordshire County Council’s Chairman but he has high hopes that his successor will continue to recognise those Unsung Heroes in the future.
