    The new electric vehicles will be used on four Diamond Bus routes.

    Staffordshire County Council has successfully bid for £2.5 million of Government funding for more electric buses in the county.

    Working with Diamond Bus, the county council applied for grants funding eight electric buses and charging equipment.

    Diamond Bus is also investing a significant amount of its own money on the vehicles and infrastructure.

    Darryl Eyers, Staffordshire County Council’s Director for Economy, Infrastructure and Skills, said:

    I am delighted our partnership with Diamond Bus has resulted in this investment, which helps move us towards reducing carbon emissions.”

    The new electric buses will be used on several routes across the east of the county:

    • five additional buses for services 8, Queen’s Hospital to Swadlincote, and 9, Queen’s Hospital to East Midlands Airport, to completely electrify the routes;
    • one new bus for service 2 to completely electrify the route between Burton and Edge Hill, via Stapenhill.
    • two more buses for the X12 service between Burton and Lichfield, via Branston.

    Funding will also see charging equipment installed in the company’s Burton depot.

    Simon Dunn, CEO of Rotala Ltd, the parent company of Diamond Bus, said:

    Diamond Bus are very proud to be working with Staffordshire County Council to deliver some great benefits to Burton bus passengers.

    One of our key business goals is to be able to bring zero emission buses to our customers and the award of this funding has enabled us to invest in eight brand new electric buses for the region.

    This commitment means that we have also invested in new infrastructure at our Burton depot to support the operation of electric buses moving forward.

    It’s great news for the region to bring cleaner, more sustainable bus services to the Staffordshire community.”
