A funding partnership to enable a major regeneration project in Stafford is set to be agreed next week.

The Stafford Gateway scheme, led by Stafford Borough Council and supported by Staffordshire County Council, will see redevelopment of land around the railway station for residential, leisure and commercial use.

This includes land bought by the county council originally as part of the Stafford Western Access Route, which will now form part of the Gateway scheme.

Stafford Borough Council secured nearly £20million from the Government for the project, of which £16.5million will be allocated to carry out work on land off Doxey Road to ensure it is suitable for redevelopment.

The county and borough councils are now set to enter into a funding agreement to ensure the initial works can be carried out.

Staffordshire County Council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for economy and skills Philip White said:

“The Stafford Gateway scheme will play an important role in the county town’s ongoing regeneration bringing investment, new homes and employment opportunities.

“The county council is playing an integral role in the project as one of the landowners of a key development area. Now that the borough council has had confirmation of central government funding for the project, we can plan these essential works to prepare land off Doxey Road for both housing and commercial development.

“We’re committed as a county council to see our towns become more vibrant and grow as places to live, work and visit. The Stafford Gateway project complements a range of exciting projects in the county town which have been delivered or are in the planning stages.”
