British National (Overseas) Visa Holder Scheme Privacy Notice
This privacy notice applies to British National Overseas Visa Holder Scheme and sets out how your personal data will be used and how it will be protected. It should be read in conjunction with the Council’s main privacy notice available on the Council’s website.
Why we collect data
Staffordshire County Council is working with partners to deliver the BNO Visa Scheme and the common objective of providing information, advice and guidance to assist BNO Visa holders settle in the UK. Your personal data is being used to understand what you and your families support needs. This will allow us to give the best possible advice.
There will be events organised to give information, advice and guidance to BNO Visa holders. We will add you to a mailing lost so we can inform you of these events.
Some events may happen across Staffordshire so we need to know where events will be best placed. We also need to plan access to services such as English Language Learning classes.
We are fully committed to complying with Data Protection Act 2018 legislation, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) We take our responsibilities seriously and use personal information fairly and safely.
Data will be collected directly from you via the BNO Visa Holder – Needs Assessment Questionnaire.
The lawful basis for doing this is:
- Article 6(1)(a) of the UK GDPR - the data subject has given consent to the processing of his or her personal data for one or more specific purposes

Visa holder information
- Name
- District reside in
- Email address
- How many children and ages in the family.
- Employment background
- Adult dependents
- Support needs
- Levels of English Language
How we use your personal data
Data received will be used to:
- Understand the needs of the BNO Visa Holder and their families needs
- Maintain and update your customer records or contact details
- Contact you directly where necessary
- Obtain your opinion and feedback about the services and support we are providing
Sometimes we may not be able to provide a service if you do not provide data.
How your data will be shared
Where necessary, information may be shared with other organisations and partners. In such cases, the information provided is only the minimum necessary. These organisations are required to retain your information in a secure manner and only use it to undertake the services they provide.
Staffordshire County Council will share your information with:
- Providers of learning programmes for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) where this has been requested
Any sharing of personal data is always done:
- on case-by-case basis
- using the minimum personal data necessary
- with the appropriate security controls in place
- in line with legislation
Your information will not be passed to other organisations for marketing or sales purposes or for any commercial use.
How long will we keep this information for?
In accordance with the principle of data minimisation), we shall delete relevant personal data as required by the relevant retention schedule or if consent is withdrawn.
