Social, emotional and mental health

Much of the information in the Social Emotional and Mental Health section of the school age toolkit is relevant here, so please refer to this alongside this additional information.

The Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR) cycle forms the framework of support in Post 16 as it does for school age children and should be used to plan and monitor interventions for social, emotional and mental health needs.

A baseline assessment of a young persons social, emotional and mental health needs is needed to ascertain what support is needed and in what area.  SEN support in this area needs to consider both support to engage in the college sessions and also any individual support that may be needed to support the young person in this area.

All young people should have an individual plan that details the support that they are receiving and desired outcomes to achieve.  This should be planned in consultation with the young person.

Examples of support in sessions in this area include:

  • adults avoiding confrontational language

  • using the principles of emotion coaching

  • using principles of a restorative approach

  • using principles of a relational approach

  • use of time out

  • use of quiet room for de-escalation

Examples of individual support include:

  • in-house counselling

  • use of progress coaches

  • 1:1 sessions with tutors/pastoral mentors

The outcomes on the individual support plan needs to be reviewed regularly, and the support plan needs to be refined in line with the progress that is being made.  Requests for support from outside agencies may be needed. Please refer to the Referral Pathways section for more details.
