Independent travel training

We train people with special needs in travelling independently to school, college or work placements. Giving them the skills and confidence to be able to travel safely and independently. This could involve buses, trains or walking. We are also able to provide help in applying for travel passes.

 

Who can use your service?

If you are aged 14-25, are Staffordshire resident and have either a statement of educational needs or a EHC. Please note that residents of the Stoke-on-Trent city area are not eligible for this service.

 

Are there any costs?

No. The service is provided by Staffordshire County Council. There may be some small expenses i.e. for travel or drinks whilst training and travelling. Those being trained may be eligible for a free concessionary bus pass.

What happens after referral?

We will ask for some more details about the person being referred, explain more about our service and arrange to carry out a home visit and complete an assessment of the person.

One of our two travel trainers; Tonya Castree or Rob Powell.

What happens when I come to the service?

We will carry out an assessment of the individual’s suitability for training and identify an appropriate route and means of travel. We will arrange with families and schools the appropriate times to begin training.
