School place planning in Tamworth Borough

A two-tier education system, with primary (4-11 years) and secondary (11-18 years) schools, operates throughout the Tamworth borough.

For the purpose of school place planning the borough is broken into smaller planning areas which are used to plan the number of school places required. These have been based on the geographical location of schools, and by assessing pupil movement between schools and catchment areas.

Tamworth has 27 primary schools, 3 infant schools, 2 junior schools, 5 secondary schools & 1 sixth form centre.

A new 1FE (210 place) primary school opened in Tamworth on the Anker Valley development site in September 2021. The new school provides 30 Reception places, increasing by one year group each year, with all year groups operational in September 2027.

A 2FE (300 place) expansion project was completed in September 2021 at The Rawlett School – An AET Academy providing 60 additional Year 7 places increasing by one year group each year, with all year groups operational in September 2025.

An expansion project to deliver 0.5FE (105 places) at Coton Green Primary School was completed in 2022. An additional 15 Reception places will be available each academic year from September 2022.

In the longer term additional primary and secondary school places may be required.

New schools

Within the borough two new primary schools are proposed to be delivered within the next five years:

Tamworth: Dunstall Park - Primary School

A 1FE (210 place) primary school is scheduled to open in September 2024, with the delivery date dependent on the construction rate and occupation of housing on the development. The school will have the capability to be expanded to 1.5FE (315 places) if necessary, in the future, in line with demand from further housing growth in the area.

The new primary free school will be a mainstream, co-educational primary school for Reception to Year 6 age groups, plus early years provision. The school will be run by the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership. More information is available on the website here: Dunstall Park Primary School – The Arthur Terry Learning Partnership (atlp.org.uk)

The new school will build pupil numbers incrementally, increasing by one year group each year. This means that upon opening, in September 2024, the free school will admit children into Nursery and Reception year groups only. In September 2025, the school will admit into Nursery, Reception, and Year 1 year groups.

A public consultation on the opening of the new school was held in December 2022.
