Notice of temporary closure

Our onsite services have recently been paused to allow us to temporarily relocate as part first stage of the Staffordshire History Centre project. This exciting heritage project will create modern facilities, bring together three incredible collections and create exciting and imaginative ways to connect Staffordshire people and their stories.

You can find updates about the project on our project microsite here: Staffordshire History Centre

Public Access During Temporary Closure

Our limited public access has now been extended to include certain time sensitive requests; please see our blog post for more information Public Access Update - Staffordshire History Centre

Each request will be carefully considered by staff against set criteria. If your request meets the criteria for public access our team will arrange an appointment for you.

The onsite access will be on a Friday afternoon and located in Stafford town centre, a short distance from Staffordshire Record Office.

Our staff will continue to run an enquiry service and are able to signpost to the most suitable resources.

Please be aware that all services will be dependent on changing levels of access to the collections during the building project and two weeks’ notice will be needed for production of documents from other sites. William Salt Library collections are currently in temporary storage and access is very limited with some areas of the collection not available until further notice, requests will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

We will review access on a regular basis and welcome feedback from service users.

Access and facilities

Parking arrangements

There is no public car park at the Record Office. The nearest long-stay car park is between North Walls and Queensway. Please see the car parking information on the Stafford Borough Council website for locations of all available car parks in Stafford.

Readers with disabilities who are orange/blue badge holders may reserve one of our two designated parking spaces. Other disabled readers may be accommodated in the adjacent councillors' car park only if circumstances permit. Please telephone ahead to check your parking arrangements in advance of your visit.

Public transport

Stafford rail station is approximately ten minutes walk from our location. Some long-distance National Express coach routes stop at Stafford rail station.

As Stafford does not have a bus station, buses serving neighbouring towns and villages stop at different points around the town centre. The main bus companies serving Stafford are Arriva, D&G, Select and First.

Location

Staffordshire Record Office is situated in Eastgate Street, behind the William Salt Library, and can be accessed through the archway opposite the end of Tipping Street. Visitors with disabilities using the reserved car parking spaces please use the rear entrance gate in North Walls, and use the intercom to request that the car park barrier be raised.
