Planning a Visit to Stoke-on-Trent City Archives
Book a visit
It is advisable to book your visit in advance as places are limited. You can book via email stoke.archives@stoke.gov.uk or during our opening hours on 01782 238420.

Wednesday - Friday: 10.00 - 16.45
1st Saturday of the month: 10.00 - 16.45
Archives Card
To look at original records you will need to sign up to the Archives Card scheme; more information and a list of valid forms of ID can be found here, Card Guidelines (archivescard.com). You can complete the online form before your visit and then show your ID on your first visit so we can verify your account on the day. When you have your new Archives Card it is valid in all participating archives.
Ordering documents in advance
To make best use of your time we advise ordering documents in advance of your visit. You can search our online catalogue Gateway to the Past to find documents, and please let us know your research area at the time of booking. Please contact us if you cannot find what you are looking for.
Photography
If you wish to photograph documents you may purchase a day or an annual photography permit (List of fees and charges - Staffordshire County Council). You can pay on the day using cash or by card online in advance (please ask staff at the time of booking). Usual copyright restrictions will apply. If you wish to photograph items in the Spode Collection this requires advance permission, please contact us for more details.

What you can bring into the reading room
For the security of the collections we limit what you can bring into the reading room. You can bring in with you:
- Pencils (but no pens)
- Notepad
- Laptop or tablet
- Camera
We provide lockers for all your other possessions and there are tables and chairs outside the reading room for drinks.
Violet’s Café and picnic area
Violet’s café is adjacent to the reading room and has a picnic area if you wish to bring tour own refreshments. There are also toilets in the café area.
Accessibility Guide
The City Archives it situated on the Lower Ground Floor of the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, which is fully wheelchair and push chair accessible, as we are a step-free site.
