Statement of Reasons

Staffordshire County Council is proposing to create a 7.5 tonne gross vehicle weight limit on Brocton Road, Pool Lane, The Green and Sawpit Lane between the A513 Main Road and the A34 Cannock Road. The prohibition would apply to vehicles exceeding a gross vehicle weight of 7.5 tonnes but have an exception for access. The proposals are supported by County Councillor John Francis.

The weight limit is proposed due to reasons of road geometry, safety and environmental reasons. Within the extents of the proposed weight restriction, the road is generally narrower and has smaller curve radii than the alternative routes making it a less safe route for larger vehicles. The proposals are also in the Cannock Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the proposal aims to protect this environment. The weight limit is therefore required for preventing the use of the road by vehicular traffic of a kind which, or its use by vehicular traffic in a manner which, is unsuitable having regard to the existing character of the road or adjoining property.

As part of Staffordshire County Council’s commitment to the delivery of highway safety improvements, we are proposing that the current speed limit on a section of the C0027 Brocton Road is reduced from 40mph to 30mph. This speed limit reduction is proposed for reducing the danger to persons or other traffic using the road or any other road and for preventing the likelihood of any such danger arising.

The proposals are supported by County Councillor John Francis.
