IT equipment disposal made easy at county recycling centres

Residents are being encouraged to recycle their used or surplus IT equipment through a new scheme run by Staffordshire’s Household Waste Recycling Centres.  

The TechCycle scheme enables residents to drop off both working and non-working IT equipment at any of Staffordshire’s 14 HWRC sites.   

Residents can take laptops, desktop PCs, monitors, mice, keyboards and cables, providing a convenient and eco-conscious solution for disposing of electronic items.  

Staffordshire County Council, in partnership with Free IT Stafford, aims to breathe new life into viable equipment by repairing old items and donating refurbished items to charity.  

Additionally, it is collaborating with EEE4, a specialised organisation that breaks down the equipment that can’t be repaired and donates the smaller components to make sure as much as possible is getting recycled.   

Councillor Simon Tagg said:

Most households contain numerous items of IT equipment which will be regularly updated.

Much can be reused or recycled, though equipment will need to be disposed of at some point and it is important that this is done responsibly in an environmentally friendly way. Items can contain components that are harmful to the environment if not processed properly on disposal.

This new scheme at our HWRC sites makes it easy for people to responsibly dispose of their obsolete and surplus IT equipment and also contributes to making Staffordshire more sustainable
