No, consent was not required. This sits under the GDPR ruling under lawful reasons for processing which is ‘public task basis’. As part of its official functions this information is required in order for the Council to carry out its statutory duty of providing free home to school transport to entitled pupils. Your child’s data is therefore required to allow us to perform that statutory duty.
A smart travel pass is recognised by the ticket machine when boarding onto a bus. The pupil will scan the pass on the ticket machine, and this should allow for quicker boarding times. The machine records the time the pupils boarded the bus by the serial number on the card. This information is sent to a central database and will be used by the school transport team. This information will not be shared with a third party.
The personal details used to produce your child’s travel pass will be held in a supplier’s secure database held in the UK in accordance with Data Protection Legislation.
The data from the smart travel pass is being used for transport planning in line with the Authorities statutory duties. We will also use it to measure quality and service provision.
Data is only captured at point of usage which is when a child boards the vehicle.
CIf your child loses their smart travel pass you will need to order them a replacement pass on the replacement pass web page at www.staffordshire.gov.uk/replacementschoolpass
