Copying and photography services
We offer a range of copying services, but all are dependent upon our duty to preserve the documents in our care. We are always happy to discuss your requirements and to suggest the most suitable means of providing copies of the documents that interest you.
Photocopying and microform prints
Follow the links to find out more about the services offered at each office, including downloadable order forms.
In some cases photography or microfilming of records may be an acceptable alternative, but please note that costs are substantially higher than for photocopying.
Private photography
You need a photographic permit to use your own camera in the Archive Service reading rooms. Daily or annual permits are available, and are valid in our offices as well as the William Salt Library.
Anyone with a permit must talk with reading room staff before using their camera to make sure:
- there are no copyright restrictions
- they complete a Copyright Declaration form
- no folding, creasing or damage will be caused to the document when taking photographs
Please note: flash photography, photographic lighting and tripods are not permitted in our reading rooms. Please talk to the reading room staff if you need to use this equipment. If you wish to use a mobile phone as a camera, it will still be necessary to obtain a permit.
Archive photography service
If you would like to use the archive photography service, please contact us and we will provide you with a list of our costs.
Commercial photography and microfilming
We can also make arrangements for a commercial photographer to photograph the documents in a studio, for £25 for up to 5 items and £1 for each additional item.
We can also obtain estimates for microfilming documents and will place orders with a local microfilming company at a cost of £50 with reservation to charge more for complex orders.
For both services there is a charge for staff time and travel expenses and we will require 50% of the payment in advance. Please contact us if you want to use these services.
Please note: companies which are registered for VAT must submit an official order for photography or microfilming work. An invoice will be issued by the Archive Service on completion of the work
